The permanent display of the diamond-shaped stone. Plus the description post for an explanation in French and English.
The diamond-shaped stone was found in 2017 in a hedge on the grounds of the old Manor House. It weighs 65 kilos. Its shape is exactly that of a lozenge similar to the elements of the Carteret’s Blazon. One in-depth study was carried out with the complicity of self-taught specialists and friendly advice from geologists, historians and noted heraldists from Caen and Jersey:
The rounded edges of the stone indicate it was not cut.
The stone is shale from the Cap de Carteret area.
A partial collapse of the cliff may have given it its present shape before it was exposed to the erosive force of the water, sand and time.
The presence of the stone that was found here leads to two possibilities towards its identification. Indeed, in the Middle Ages, the origin of the coats of arms was predominantly linked to the Crusades, as distinctive elements, which the Dukes of Normandy participated in.
First hypotheses :
The Seigneurs de Carteret had already decided on a four mandrel blazon and the stone found at the bottom of the cliff was taken back to the Manor House, as a visual sign of destiny…?
Second hypothesis :
The Seigneurs de Carteret did not yet have a blazon and the discovery of that remarkable stone might be the origin of the Carteret’s four silver mandrels…?
